Are HCG Levels Correlated To Fetal Gender?

hello, I d like to know whether hcg in first trimester screening is measured in the same unit as quantitative hcg in the beginning of the pregnancy ? if at first semester screening it says 60.3 IU/ ml - does it mean hcg= 60,300 ? is there any correlation between levels of hcg and fetal gender? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
The hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced during pregnancy. Its levels can first be detected in blood by 11 days after conception and about 12-14 days after conception in urine.
In blood, the hCG levels will double every 72 hours. The level will reach its peak in the first 8-11 weeks of pregnancy and then will decline and level off for the remainder of the pregnancy.
An hCG level of less than 5mIU/ml is considered negative for pregnancy, and anything above 25mIU/ml is considered positive for pregnancy.
There is no correlation between hCG levels and fetal gender. Fetal gender can only be determined by ultrasound scan between 12 to 14 weeks of gestation.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
