Are Abortion Pills Safe If Taken After Their Expiry Date?
Hi could you tell me if the abortion pills misoprostal and mifepristone are okay to use past their expiry date? Such as a year past? I have read that pills are safe to take after expiry as this is only the date the are most effective to, is this correct? Thanks amanda
No pills are safe after the expiry date. Most of the drug are not tested for their effects after the expiry date as they can be very harmful and no one would be willing to get tested in this fashion.
So we do not know what the effects may be especially if they are taken after such a long time as one year. If efficacy is the only question then it is not a problem but some drugs may develop harmful ingredients in them after their shelf life is over. Also the preservatives loose their effects and the drugs may become toxic.
So please do not use expired drugs. I understand that it is a temptation as drugs are expensive. But please remember that this can be harmful.
Hope this satisfies your query. Thanks for using HCM. Feel free to ask any more questions that you may have. Dr Madhuri Bagde Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist
