Are Beta Hcg And Papp-a Tests Necessary During Pregnancy?
Hi,My wife is 11week 3 days pregnant and is 29yrs old. Yesterday we had the Nuchal scan and the result was 1mm with the measure of nasal bone as 2.9 mm long. But the doctor did not tell us to do blood test for beta hCG and PAPP-A. While surfing the net i found out that this test increases the odds of detecting the risk for downs syndrom and should be done in conjuction with nuchal scan. Should we go ahead with blood test or the nuchal scan is enough ?

Hi, I understand your concern. Nuchal translucency test is a screeing test for Down's syndrome. The Nuchal translucency less than 3.5 mm is taken as normal. Your wife shows it to be 1mm. it is within normal limits -& you need not worry. Beta HCG testing / PAPP A tests are also screening tests for Down's syndrome. In case of strong doubt ( like family history of Downs) Chromosomal analysis is preferred as a confirmatory test. Thanks.
