Are Breathing Difficulty And Chest Pain Post Injury A Cause For Concern?

10 year old son got tripped while playing football. Fell on chest. Coughed up mucus right after. Wheezing and hard to breathe at first. School nurse said O2 level was at 94 and at first couldnt hear air in lower lungs and wheezing. After a 1/2 hr air movement could be heard in lower lungs and still some wheezing in upper. The noisy breathing has stopped. He is complaining about his chest hurting and feels like its hard to breathe. He does suffer from cold air induced asthma. Should i nust continue to monitor at home? He is moving around like normal.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Due to the history of asthma and also the changes in the lung's auscultation after the trauma it is best that you send your child to be seen by a doctor and have a proper lung examination and probably an x-ray to rule out pneumothorax as well. Pneumothorax is an acute condition that can cause a collapse of the lungs so it is important to be ruled out after trauma when the patient gets shortness of breath and chest pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
