Are Certain Foods Needs To Be Avoided By An Heart Patient?

I am a 60 year old African American Female. I take lipitor for cholesterol blockage. I have intracranial stenosis and recently small stroke and had a stint placed on 3/15. I also had an left carotid endorterectomy in 2012. In 2010 I suffered a CVA that left me with temporary left sided weakness. My question. I have been eating grapefruit, probably 3 in the last week. Am I in any danger?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear , This is Dr. S. Tomar from healthcaremagic.com's medical team and I ll be your medical adviser for this question. First of all thank you for sharing your concern with us and showing trust on us.
Grapefruit contains some chemicals like furanocoumarins which can increase the levels of some medicines in blood from therapeutic levels to toxic levels including medicines for heart . Grapefruit consumption can cause 3 to 4 times higher levels of statins in blood by altering the absorption and can cause potentially dangerous breakdown of muscles which eventually can cause kidney problems and even failure. If you are on these medicines then don't eat grapefruit , its highly advisable .

This is my initial response and discussion is open until you have any query or need further clarification.
I wish you good health .
Thank you for your question and feel free to contact further for any question .
sincerely,
Dr. Shardendu Tomar
