Are Condoms Safe To Use While Taking Bromocriptine To Reduce Prolactin Levels?
I am currently taking bromocriptine to reduce my levels of prolactin. I am sexually active and using condoms I do not want to get pregnant right now are condoms safe do use while on this medication or is it better to use condoms and something else to lower chances of pregnancy. Thanks
** Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern
1. Since high prolactin level inhibits two hormone necessary for ovulation: Follicle stimulating Hormone [FSH] and Gonadotrophin releasing hormone [GnRH], as such women have anovulatory cycles and results in low progesterone and high estrogen which shortens the luteal phase thus impairs your ability to become pregnant by prevent implantation of the embryo causing early miscarriage.
2. Do exclude/normalise other causes of high prolactin like: hypothyroidism, high stress level, antipsychotic medicine
3. Bromocriptine is a dopamine agonist and works by blocking the release of prolactin by pituitary gland, and since Bromocriptine may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pill thus to prevent pregnancy, be sure to use an additional form of birth control (eg, condoms) while using bromocriptine.
