Are Dark Colored Urine With Blood, Nausea And Fatigue Sure Signs Of Jaundice?

Hi I am a 42 year old female, 5.4 in height and 68 kg in weight. I do enjoy social drinking and have a few drinks throughout the week and weekends but never enough to endure a hangover the next day. I use to binge drink when i was younger prior having family. I have been on Zenical off and on for 5 years (prescribed originally by doctor but my BMI is lower now but was still able to get from original chemist). I have also been taking duromine randomly for the last few years (one per week if going to function to stop over eating). Three weeks ago I had a small operation and was given pain killers for post care. I was only on them for 2 of the 4 days. 5 days later I had a few drinks at our Xmas party and was ok but not 100 percent but the following day I felt very nauseous and very fatigued. I just thought it was my body taking longer to get over the Xmas cheer! This has happened a few times in the last year but only lasted a day. I went to a friends place and after going to toilet noticed my urine was a dark tea colOur (couldn t tell at my place as we have blue urinal cubes). I originally thought dehydration and proceeded to drink large amounts of water. Next morning didn t feel any better so went to doctor who did a urine stix and a physical (had no pain or tenderness but feeling of full below ribs) and was informed I had urine in blood and needed a blood test as she suspected liver damage from meds (at time gave a brief run down of events but didn t mention xenical or duromine as didn t realize they could also add to problem). I had blood test (just liver next day). The doctor phoned following day and confirmed it was my liver and that it was very inflamed - so no alcohol/fatty food/ aspirin at all. I had to go back 5 days later for another test which I did. I phoned for results and doctor was busy but the receptionist said there was a note for me to make a non urgent appointment to discuss results. I was going away for a week so I needed to know if well enough to work as I know she also tested for hep A/B/C and a few others (CML?? ad one other starting with E). The receptionist could only tell me that all tests came back clear and it was the liver results that were still abnormal (she couldn t tell me what the levels were). So I assumed levels were lower. I did get slight jaudice and itching a day or so after first blood test but other than that I am feeling great (no other symptoms).

Hello,

Dark brown urine may indicate liver disease due to the presence of bile in the urine. It happens when there is liver dysfunction due to infection, inflammation or enlargement. You are suggested to get all required investigations done like blood tests, lipid function tests, CT / MRI, magnetic resonance elastography, liver biopsy to get a detailed study and confirm diagnosis so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

In the meantime, stop take alcohol or addictions if any. Switch to healthy lifestyle. Avoid food that is oily, fatty, spicy & hot. Avid junk food, trans fat, full fat dairy products, red meat, refined flour, etc. You can take fresh home made food that is boiled with a dash of olive oil. Do not take fried food, it will trigger your symptoms and make you very ill. You should take food that is good for the liver, take liver tonics and plenty of water to detox. You need rest. Do not over exhaust yourself, do not take stress or do any heavy work.

You need at least 8 hours sleep to help your metabolism get back to normal. Take a lot of cooked veggies, fruits and berries. Take lean meat and small fish. Take well cooked whole cereals. Stay connected to your treating doctor and take Liver function tests once in 45 days to see your improvement. It will take a little time, but your liver will improve if you take proper prescription medicines by your treating doctor, switching to healthy eating habits. Do regular walking and stretch exercises.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
