Are Detoxification Medicines Effective In An Alcoholic Addict?
Our son just got out of the hospital the 24th.... He was in for 8 days for detox (he has been an alcoholic for many years) His liver is scarred and gone..... they have him on meds...he seems to be doing ok so far, but I noticed today he is back on his Skoal.....he has done that for quite some time also. It's the under the lip kind. My question is.....will the meds have any effect now since he is on this filthy habit again???? Thanks..... a concerned mother.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. In most of alcohol detox programs they use replacement medicines like Benzodiazepines are used in acute phase of treatment and once patient is stabilised then anticraving drugs like Naltrexone, Acamprosate, Baclofen etc are used. In my opinion these medicines wouldn't cause any effects on his health even if he takes Skoal. Please ask him to quit and try to motivate him. Some detox programs use Disulfiram and this drug should be completely avoided along with alcohol. Consult his doctor if he develop any symptoms.
Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
