Are Involuntary Eye Movement And Speech Stuttering Indicative Of A Neurological Disorder?

My son has briefly stuttered and it was apparent for a month or so at about 2.5 years and went away and now he is 3 and it came back but I was told it was normal but now there seems so be neurological aspects to it where his eyes blink a ton and seems not with it at all when It happens and as he stutters the word each time it gets quieter and quieter almost as if his motor skills in his mouth are slowly stopping working until he gets completely silent then finally after he will get the word out. I don t know if this is normal stuttering or something else going on in the brain?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This could be a neurological problem- specially in view of the rapid blinking. The feeling that he stutters till he stops and then restarts after a period. And rapid eye blinking. I would really like to rule out the onset of a primary dystonia. You will need to meet a neurologist for the same. If it is not that, then we can rule out a neurological problem. As for the stuttering I would suggest meeting a speech therapist. So please make an appointment with them. And for sure, do not focus on the child's stuttering. The focus on the symptoms will only make the child more nervous and hence increase the symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
