Are The Side Effects Of Taking Acetylcysteine During CT Scan Procedure?

Hi, the hospital is recommending that I take a liquid called acetylcysteine twice a day the day before my ct scan, the day of my ct scan and the day after the ct scan. Can you tell me the reason for this and highlight any possible side effects I should watch for as a result of taking it. Thanks. Jim. YYYY@YYYY

N- Acetyl Cysteine is known to prevent contrast induced nephropathy i.e. kidney injury due to the contrast agent given during CT scan procedure. Several studies have proven and many more did not prove the efficacy of this drug. By convention many doctors would still use this drug. THe best policy so far to prevent such a mishap is " drinking good amount of water and avoid dehydration. If the patient is on any drug that can damage the kidney, and should be avoided during this procedure
