Arrhythmia Got Better After Bypass. Why Pulse Rate Reduces After Taking Sotalol And Again Increases?

my husband had bypass done in April... also had Arrithmia... all gotten better after the bypass.
but 2 weeks ago his pulse starteet to be 125.. he was put on Sotalol 80 mg BID Twice a day) the pulse goes down after he takes the pill... but later on it goes up to 110 or 90 again why ist that>?

Dear patient,

Thanks for the query. The pulse goes down because sotalol is a beta blocker or pulse slower, but it also helps prevent arrhythmias. If the pulse suddenly increases to those numbers, I suspect he is not being controlled on that dose of the medication; a Holter monitor can confirm that. If so, other medications or radiofrequency ablation can be considered.
