Automobile Accident, Broken Sternum, Hemoglobin Blister, Likely To Affect Heart. What Action Must Be Taken?
my sister was in an auto accident today. Air bag deployed. Taken by ambulance. catscan revealed a broken sternum. Also revealed was a hymoglobin blister (sp?) behind sternum and she was admitted to the cardiology floor for observation. The team of surgeons wants to make sure pressure does not affect her heart. Unclear if it's the pressure from the blister or the broken sternum. What action would be taken if they determine that there is pressure to the heart? Thank you -
The limited information provided is not sufficient enough to arrive at an appropriate conclusion... Probably she has haemo-pericardium? (Blood in the pericardial sac - covering of the heart), from the trauma... If so, it needs careful observation for pressure on the heart (Tamponade)... If the threat is impending, it needs immediate drainage / may be removing the pericardium, later, in a few... The treatment is based on diagnosis / diagnosis is based on examination and investigation / one needs exact diagnosis for exact suggestion... The treating doctor may suggest them depending on need, based on his assessment of the situation.
Take care Wishing speedy recovery God bless Good luck
