Baby Passing Dark, Sticky Stools. Looked Like Meconium. Feeds On Formula Milk, Sweet Potatoes, Bananas. Suggestions?

My 6 month old has dark, sticky bowel movement . Her grandmother referred to it as black, but it looks like a dark gray/greenish color to me. It happened today, as well a few times earlier this week. She is formula fed and eats sweet potatoes and bananas so far (one feeding with peas yesterday and two with oatmeal). It looked similar to online photos of meconium. Should I page the pediatrician or can it wait until the office opens? Thank you for your help...Melissa

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

If it is green colored stool it is not much to worry about. It just indicates increased bowel movement.

A black colored stool could be because of altered blood among various other causes.

A thorough examination including a stool examination may be required to arrive at a diagnosis.

Is your kid is other wise active and playful?

Please reply in detail.
Take care.

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi Melissa,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Nothing to worry and don't be panic.

Your child seems to have infection.

I advise you to give stool for routine and for culture and sensitivity to know the presence of infection after conslting your Pediatrician.

Probiotic like lactobacillus or saccharomyces can be given orally after consulting your Pediatrician.

It is not meconium and this is green color of the stool.

Don't be panic and you can consult your Pediatrcian in the office.

Hope I have answered your query, if you have any clarification please let me know.

Regards.
