Baby Teething. Fingers And Toe Peeling. Had Cold, Episodes Of Pyrexic. Explain Peeling

My son (22 months old) has started suffering from his fingers and toes peeling. The skin is coming away at a significant rate, (more on his toes than fingers), it doesnt seem to be bothering him, and I let him walk around the house with no shoes and socks on as much as possible, although this is not improving or exacerbating the situation. He has recently had a cold and had episodes of being pyrexic, this was managed with normal calpol . He has recovered from the cold. The only other thing he is going through at the moment is teething , although this is also not bothering him at present. Why the peeling?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi

Peeling of skin in peripheries can happen during recovery phase of some infections like scarlet fever.

If he is otherwise normal- without fever, with good oral intake, with normal activity and peeling is limited to finger and toes without any bleeding- you need not worry. Just visit your Pediatrician to get reassured that everything is fine. You may apply some moisturizing lotions to prevent dryness.

How ever if your son continues to get fever, he his dull/ irritable, his oral intake is poor, peeling is progressing to other body parts or if bleeding is seen beneath the peeled off skin- its a must that you see your Pediatrician immediately.
In such a case one needs to rule out some conditions like Kawasaki Disease, Staphylococcal Scalded Skin syndrome etc.

Hope my answer helps you.
Wish your son good health.
