Hi,
Atorvastatin can cause muscle and joint pains which are usually mild. However, in 1-2% of patients these can be severe. So I think your partner could be correct in thinking it may be the statin causing the problems. Also, if he has had gout in the past then this may have returned and be the cause of his foot pain. There are a number of different statins available and they have different side-effect profiles.
I would suggest you visit your doctor to seek further advice about possibly changing to another statin and starting a medication for gout.

Cardiologist Dr. Sukhvinder Singh's  Response
Dear Madam
Thanks for writing to us.
Statins are known to cause muscle pain and muscle weakness. But joint pains usually are not induced directly by them. Moreover they are such an important part of cardiac armamentorium that we can not withdraw them without thorough work up. I would request you to see your doctor, get him examined and investigated with a view on statin toxicity too.
Hope this will solve the issue.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
