Bad Cough. On Antibiotics. Sputum Test Shows Positive For Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Scant Serration Marcescens. X-ray Shows Clear Lungs. Advice
My son is 29 and has had a horrible cough for over 7 months and smells really bad. He has been prescribed 5or 6 different antibiotics with the last one being bactrim for 2 weeks and a 2 week break and now bacterium again for another 2 weeks. His sputum test back positive for 3+ streptococcus pneumoniae, 3+ stomata occurs species and scant serration marcescens. That was on 4/29/13. He's getting worse and he had an X-ray and his lungs are one higher than the other but supposedly clear. We don't know what to do
Your son is suffering recurrent lower respiratory tract infection. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common bacteria causing LRI in the community. For a seven months duration of cough and the Chest X ray is not conclusive than go for CT chest. Do a Sputum culture and sensitivity and choose the antibiotic accordingly. Consult a Pulmonologist.
