Bipolar Disorder, Fibromyalgia, Severe Pain. On Hydrocodone, Ativan And Lamictal. Will This Bring Back Self Control?

My daughter is bi-polar 2. She has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and has sever pain, quite often. She has been prescribred hydrocodone 7.5 for pain. She takes Ativan, and Lamictal for her bi-polar and is well controlled. Since starting the hydrocodone, she is acting MEAN, difficult, arguementative. Is it possible that this medication could be affecting her personality because of her bi-polar. She seems out of control....not like herself. This is only her second day on the hydro. and her personality is different! I'm nervous about this medication.

Welcome to HCM!

I have read your question carefully and from my clinical experience I can say that the change in behavior of your daughter appears due to hydrocodone.

it is a opioid analgesic, and being an opioid it has affect on mood. Opoids can alter the mood and as your daughter is already having BPAD II, she got disturbed. moreover , it also alters the metabolism of lamictal, may reduce its blood levels and make the drug less effective.

I donot know of the doctor prescribing her hydrocodone knew that she is on lamictal for BPAD II or not?

I would advice you to meet her doctor who treats her for fibromyalgia and see if he can change the medicine and give her some non- opoid analgesic.
In case he cannot, you can visit the psychiatrist and get the doses of lamictal adjusted/changed.

Hope the reply helps you
