Bladder Fistula Developed After Hysterectomy. Is It Risky To Repair Fistula Until Edges Have Healed ?
I had a hysterectomy 5 weeks ago. A bladder fistula developed 14 days after surgery. The urologist says he won't repair the fistula until the edges have healed, he says mid-August (8 weeks). Why can't he just cut around the tear and sew the clean edges together? (and do it TOMORROW)? He said there is a risk of recurrence if he repairs it too soon, but there is also a risk when he does it in 8 weeks. Is it the same sized risk?
If the fistula has to be repaired it should be done within one to two days after surgery leading to fistula. But now as the fistula developed 2 weeks after the surgery, that might have occurred due to sloughing of the tissue. So now as the tissue is not healthy, if he repairs also it will not heal and recurrence is possible. After around 8 weeks the new tissue generation can occur and when the fistula is repaired at that time that can heal.
