Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi doctor. My 49 year old father had a little bump - like in his anal. he had a surgery but is still in pain and still has mucus coming out from there. The doctors now think it might be fistula. so i would like to know what is fistula and its causes? is it safe to have surgery?
Hello, I can understand your concern for your father's health. 1) Fistula is abnormal communication between two cavity. 2) Anal fistula has one opening at skin and other opening inside anal canal. 3) Constipation is causative factor for anal fistula but main reason for development of it is unnoticed small infection near to anal canal. 4) Anal fistula can not be treated with medical treatment though medical treatment is essential before surgery to reduce infection inside fistula which improve the outcome. 5) Surgery for fistula depends on location of inner opening. Lower level of inner opening has good results following surgery but high level of internal opening has chances of recurrence of fistula.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you. Have a nice day!
