Blood Report Showing Positive For Leukocyte Esterase. Have Burning And Urgency For Urination. Is This Something Else?

HI. Two weeks ago, I thought I was suffering from a UTI , felt the burning, urgency but not a lot of urine . I was prescribed Septra for 7 days which has not really been working. Since then, got a call from the doctor to come and see him about my results. He said I had 3+ blood, and positive leukocyte esterase . He has put me on Ciprofloxacin now for 7 days. I still have burning and urgency and pain in my lower abdomen. Do you think it is a UTI or maybe something more serious? Thanks for your time!

Hello!

Yes,it could be due to UTI.

Do you have fever?Do you have any other symptoms like abdominal pain, burning micturation?
Do you have any other medical illness like renal calculi or diabetes.

This information could help to come to a conclusion.

Here are the few causes and risk factors of hematuria and positive leukocyte esterase:
-Urinary tract infection
-Bladder stones
-Kidney stones or ureter stones
I would like to suggest USG KUB and renal function test to rule out these possibilities.

As already you have been started on antibiotics continue it for 7-10 days

Hope this could help you.

Wish you good health.

Hi, Thanks for your query, Increasing fluid intake: This may work by washing out organisms in the tract, making it more difficult for pathogens to adhere or stay in close proximity to human cells.
Not delaying in emptying the bladder (urination): This has the same effects of increasing fluid intake and helps the bladder reduce the number of pathogens that may reach the bladder.
Eating cranberries or blueberries or drinking their unsweetened juice: These berries contain antioxidants that may help the immune system, and some investigators suggest they contain compounds that reach the urine and reduce the adherence of pathogens to human cells.
Eating pineapple: Pineapple contains bromelain that has anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce UTI symptoms.
Taking vitamin C: Vitamin C may function to increase urine acidity to reduce bacterial growth.
