In such situations, several drugs are usually given – to quieten the conscious patient / to ease the work of breathing / and to prevent from fighting the respirator. Generally, there may not be a problem when weaned... if there is a paralysis, it could often be detected by the specialist even when unconscious... The treating doctor alone will be better placed to judge based on his assessment of the situation.
