Bruises From Dog Bite. Concerned About Rabies. Had Rabies Vaccination

Two days ago two dogs where playing in the sea in Thailand. I happened to be near them in the sea at the time and one of the dogs grabbed my leg as I tried to leave the sea. I have two bruises, but no cuts or scratches. The bruising is started to heal now, but I m slighty concerned still. I had the three rabies vaccination treatments before I came traveling in December. Should I be worried about rabies?

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Dog bite with development of bruising requires vaccination against rabies.

If tetanus is not taken within the last 5 years, you take tetanus toxoid also.

As you have received rabies vaccine in December for three dose as pre exposure prophylaxis, now you will requires only two doses of anti rabies vaccine with a gap of 3 or 7 days.

Therefore I advise you to consult the Physician and take rabies vaccination as per his advise.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Hello!
Thanks for posting query.

Getting bruises after dog bite is an indication for rabies vaccination. It comes in category 2 of dog bite.Category 2 dog bite requires rabies immunization.

As you have received pre-exposure prophylaxis for rabies in December, you need to take only two more injections of rabies vaccine. As per WHO protocol two intramuscular or intradermal doses of a cell-derived vaccine separated by three days are sufficient in such cases.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis gives advantage by eliminating the urgency of vaccination. Also you need not to take rabies immunoglobulin injections as you have already developed anti-rabies antibodies by previous vaccination.

You need to take tetanus toxoid injection if you have not received booster dose in last 5-10 years.

Hope this will help you.

Wish you good health.
