Burning Sensation On Tip Of Tongue, Lips, Under Stress. Washing With Benadryl, Maylox. Recommendations?

I have a burning sensation on the tip of my tongue and it looks irritated. My lips kind of burn as well. I went to my dr yesterday and she said she wasn't sure what it was. Didn't look like there were any sores or ulcers. She told me to swish liquid benedryl with maylox 4 times a day to numb it. But what is it and why won't it go away? It's been burning like this since Sunday. Could it be stressed induced? I have been under a lot of stress lately.

Dentist Dr. Juhi Soni's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for using this forum,
As per your symptoms it seems that the reasons could be allergic reaction from some food or mouthwash, due to nutritional deficiencies, fungal infection, biting the tip of the tongue and teeth grinding (bruxism), may result from overbrushing your tongue, using abrasive toothpastes, overusing mouthwashes or having too many acidic drinks, such as lemon, due to stress.
Drink more fluids, to help ease the feeling of dry mouth, but avoid carbonated beverages.
Avoid spicy-hot foods.
Avoid acidic foods and liquids, such as orange juice, soft drinks and coffee.
Try different mild brands of toothpaste, such as one for sensitive teeth or one without mint
Take steps to reduce excessive stress.
Take care

Hi,
Sucking on ice or sipping on cold water to reduce the burning and pain
Chewing on sugar-free gum to increase the production of saliva and prevent dry mouth syndrome
Get your dentist to take care of any cavities, gum disease, or ill-fitting dentures
Regular exercise such as yoga and meditation can lessen stress and anxiety that can aggravate the symptoms
Lavender oil applied to the mouth can offer quick relief in cases of burning tongue
Applying a layer of glycerin over the tongue can reduce the pain and burning
Other burning tongue remedies include avoiding smoking and alcohol, and cutting down on spicy and oily foods
It is important to know the risk factors involved with such a syndrome as it can help determine the cause of the condition and make it easier to receive more accurate treatment for the same.
Regards.
