CT Scan Shows Small Bilateral Inguinal Hernias, Ultrasound Negative, Dull Ache. Concerned?

CT Scan shows small bilateral inguinal hernias. Ultrasound was negative. I was recently treated for Epididymitis with antibiotics. I now have discomfort in my lower right abdominal area like a dull ache. It feels better to lay down and worse to sit. How can I determine if this moderate pain is because of the Epididymitis or inguinal hernia? No problems on left side. A surgeon suggested that I get the hernias repaired, but I m not sure what to do.

Hi,
From history it seems that you might be having indirect or direct inguinal hernia.
Pain or discomfort while sitting or standing and feeling relief while lying down position is indicative of having hernia.
Hernia can be very well judged on physical examination.
So your surgeon after examination confirms hernia, go for repair.
Ok and take care.

General & Family Physician Dr. Nsah Bernard's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

Determination of inguinal hernias do hardly require CT scans as they are usually clinically determined but if you are lucky to have had a scan and it showed hernias, then it is best to consider option repair as the complications of inguinal hernias if they come up will be unwanted.
The pain you are describing will likely be related to inguinal hernia rather than epididymitis which is usually a permanent pain which does not necessary occur when sitting or sleeping (it is will just be present). Inguinal hernia on the other hand can only occur when some kind of abdominal pressure is exerted especially when seated. I suggest you go in for a hernias repair.

Hope this helps and wish you the best
