I just found out I was pregnant and am currently taking buprenorphine. I ve been on this medication for over 2 years for the past abuse of prescriptions opiates. I was first prescribed it when I was pregnant with my first son so I wouldn t be using. I was 5 months pregnant when I first was put on it. He never suffered any effects of it and is excelling in developmental milestones. I even breastfed him while taking the medication. I m only 4 weeks pregnant and am worried because this is the crucial time for development. Will my taking buprenorphine harm my baby?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Buprenorphine is a narcoticanalgesic. It works by working in the brain and nervous system to decrease pain. It is used for treating moderate to severe pain. Although animal studies have failed to reveal evidence of teratogenicity (fetal malformations), use of buprenorphine has been associated with difficulty in labour and fetotoxicity. FDA categorises this drug under Category C. It means that, potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnancy despite potential risks. Kindly consult your doctor for the review of its use. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
