Can Buspirone HCL Be Taken While Having Narrow Angle Glaucoma?

I was taken off escitalphram about a month ago due to side effects. The doctor has prescribed buspirone hcl 10 mg. I have narrow angle glaucoma...it it safe to take buspirone? I have not gotten my Rx filled yet and do not wish to waste money purchasing the new drug if I later find out that I should not take it if I have narrow angle glaucoma.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not safe to take Buspirone while suffering from narrow angle glaucoma. Buspirone is an anti-anxiety medicine which can have anticholinergic properties which would prevent adequate drainage of aqueous humor (eye fluid) resulting in increased intraocular (eye) pressure.

An increased eye pressure can further aggravate the narrow angle glaucoma hence it is not advisable to take Buspirone while suffering from narrow angle glaucoma. Kindly consult your doctor for an alternative effective but a safer medication for your anxiety related problems.

Hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further, A feed back is appreciated.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
