Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, As per treatment protocol for acute malnutrition, we have to give routine antibiotics to all acutely malnourished children including those who do not have apparent signs of infection. Protocol suggests to give amoxicillin at the dose of 50 mg/kg/day. however I wanted to know feasibility of using cephalexin instead of amoxcillin as a routine antibiotic. only thing I am wondering is about using cephalexin in children without apparent symptoms.
* Cephalexin is first generation cephalosporin covering many gm positive and gm negative organisms causing infection.
* It can be replaced for amoxicillin, provided there is no history of drug reaction, correct dosage as per the age, weight criteria and the prescription is obtained by a qualified doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
