Can Depo-Provera Cause Irregular Vaginal Bleeding?

I m 39 years old. I am currently on the depo shot for birth control. I have been using the Depo shot for 10+ years. During this 10+ years I would rarely get a period. Within the last year I have experienced bleeding for a month straight, or sporatic bleeding. One day nothing the next day bleeding with blood clots. Currently I have been bleeding every other day or every second day for the last month. I ve read that Depo can cause irregular bleeding. Is this just the Depo or should I been concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Prolonged bleeding or spotting together with the absence of a period is characteristic of depo usage. I think you don't have to worry about it. Just continue with normal routine check-ups.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
