Can Diclofenac Sodium And Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim Be Taken Together?

A 79 year old male was taken to the ER for a possible drug interaction with sulfamethoxazole tmf and diclofenac sodium. He had been on the diclofenac for six months without any reaction, but when the sulfamethoxzole was added, after seven days his blood pressure dropped to 75 over 47 and heart rate was low and potassium level shot up to 7.8. He was treated with various medications to counter react the interaction of the two drugs (according to the Kidney DR). My pharmacist could not find any reference to these two drugs causing this reaction. Because he took a laxative the night before this happened, he was told this probably saved his life. Can you shed any additional light on this reaction? Thank you! Betty Amory

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your history, you have developed such symptoms after 7 days of taking Sulfamethoxazole, so I don't think it is due to the combination of these two drugs. Kindly consult with physician for detailed examination and treatment. You can take tablet Prednisolone after consultation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale
