Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Pleese discuss the risk of taking Eliquis and escitalopram together. If it is not contraindicated and if it is advisable to do so, what blood test(s) should be monitored (if any) and how often? Would venlafaxine be a safer antidepressant? Any other antidepressants that might be safer than escitalopram to use with Eliquis? Thank you for your input, F. David Russek, M. D.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is not safe to take Escitalopram drug while on Eliquis medicine. Eliquis (Apixaban) drug is an oral anticoagulant commonly prescribed for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis and stroke.
When taken along with antidepressants like Escitalopram or Venlafaxine it may increase the risk of bleeding. You should consult your treating doctor if you experience unusual bruising, bleeding from the nose, and blood in the stool or urine. Your doctor will prescribe an alternate effective antidepressant or adjust the dose of these medications.
Unfortunately, there is no specific lab test to monitor the toxicity of Eliquis. However, tricyclic antidepressants like Amitriptyline or Imipramine can be taken safely while on Eliquis as these antidepressants are not known to increase the risk of bleeding.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
