Hello Dr. Rynne, I am presently taking Ampicillin TR 500 MG capsules for a urinary tract infection. I take one capsule by mouth every six (6) hours. I read on Web MD that Flaxseed Oil is also used for bladder infections. Could I safely take Flaxseed Oil with this medication, or might there be an interaction with this medicine? Also, could I also include Alpha-Lipoic Acid, or just take one or the other? Thank you for your help. Selena
There is no role of flaxseed oil or alpha lipoic acid in the treatment of UTI. Urinary tract infections are the commonest bacterial infection in older people and the risk increases with age. Predisposing factors in old age include diabetes, urinary tract stones, steroid use, and chronic illness impairing immune system. Advice 1. Continue ampicillin as advised by your doctor 2. Syrup alkaline citrate 2 teaspoonful three times daily for 1 week 3. Take other medicines as usual 4. Drink plenty of water to flush out bacteria 5. Drink cranberry juice 6. Do not hold your urine. Urinate when you feel 7. Investigations d. R/E of urine e. C/S of urine f. TLC & DLC You change antibiotic after C/S report of urine. Thanks
