Can I Stop Taking Sulfasalazine As It Is Not Giving Much Relief From Arthritis?

Can I stop taking sulfasalazine abruptly. I missed several doses (I usually take 2 in morning and 2 in evening) and didn't think it changed anything. No more or less discomfort with my arthritis issue. Can I test to see if nothing changes by not taking it?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Sulfasalazine is a DMARD (disease modifying antirheumatic drug) which is prescribed in a few arthritic conditions. This is to let you know that it acts Very slowly and the time it takes to provide the therapeutic response is from 8-10 weeks.

It is not a pain killer but a disease modifying drug. It is not advisable to take any self decisions regarding the drug intake.

Consult your treating doctor and follow his advice.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
