Can Januvia Be Taken While On Metformin And Glipizide

My doctor has prescribed Metformin and glipizide, together with Januvia. I am taking two 500 Metformin in the morning and two 500 Metformin in the evening plus 1 10 mg glipizide in morning and 1 10 mg glipizide in the evening. Now she wants to add Januvia. My A1C is running slightly over 8. Problem is I m crashing with low blood sugar or having high blood sugar. No middle ground. The Januva has so many serious side effects, I m afraid to take it. I feel like a human guinea pig.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Metformin and glipizide are taking good control of your diabetes. However, HbA1c test is running slightly over 8.

If you do not want to add Januvia, then, should follow a strict diabetes diet:

- Have 3 main large meals with 2 small meals (snack time) in between
- Avoid high calorie/sugary foods
- Have at least 30 mins of walking after each large meal
- Increase plain water intake
- Include more fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet
- Certain herbs such as cinnamon, bitter gourd, fenugreek, et cetera can also help

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
