Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking lisinoptil 10mg a blood pressure medicine and I want to take a natural blood pressure vitamin that contains hawthorn, magnesium grapeseed extract .will the two interact or do I need to wait seven days for the medicine to get out of my system before taking the vitamin..
I would advise you not to abruptly stop the lisinopril, as it may cause a sudden rise of your blood pressure. Note that I am not approving the use of supplements for high blood pressure control, but I respect your personal choice to try alternative therapy. If you do want to seriously consider the supplement, start by reducing the lisinopril to 5 mg for at least two weeks to wait for the effects to show and stabilise. You can start the supplement immediately when you do this, and if after two weeks your blood pressure remains good Make sure you do daily blood pressure readings, and don't let it get above 150/100 mmHg. The ideal target is 120/80 mmHg, and about 5 mmHg lower if you're diabetic.
It's somewhat a similar procedure for people who are on high blood pressure medication but who improve well after drastically changing their diet and lifestyle habits, and losing large amounts of weight if they're overweight. I have personally taken my patients off medication before, if their blood pressure is well controlled. However, it must always be done gradually, and with close monitoring.
Hope this helps, and all the best to you.
Regards, Dr. Teh
