Can Loratidine And Erythromycin Be Used Together?

i was prescribed 500mg flucloxacillin 4x a day for a skin infection, i only ever took 1 tablet and had a bad reaction (tremors, pounding heart and swolen lips) my doctor gave me 1 x 10ml dose of loratidine to counter act the reaction and this seemed to do the trick, i have now been prescribed erythromycin for my skin infection, my question is, i read that loratadine and erythromycin shouldnt be mixed, so how long should i wait after having that single flucloxacillin tablet and then the 10ml dose of loratadine before i start to take my erythromycin

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Because of the harmful interactions of abnormal heart rhythm it is not advisable for take Loratidine and Erythromycin together. Since the half life of Loratidine is about 20 to 28 hours so it would take approximately 4 to 5 days for its total clearance from the body. Either you may start taking Erythromycin after 5 days of stopping Loratidine or ask your doctor for an alternate effective antibiotic for the skin infection.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
