Can Meftal P Be Given To A Child For Recurring Fever?
Hi, my child has fever around 101-102 F since noon today. Her weight is around 17kg. Not sure whether she is having dengue or viral. We gave her Dolo 250 twice since noon but fever is not going away. Can we give Meftal P in thisn situation and what dosage?
Yes, Meftal-P can be given to children with recurrent fever but its exact cause should be investigated and treated accordingly.
If fever is not responding to Dolo or recurs more frequently (less than 6 hours), Meftal-P can be given.
Meftal P contains Mefenamic acid which can be given at 4 to 6.5 mg/kg per dose (maximum 25 mg/kg/day) three times daily.
She should also be given plenty of oral fluids, fruit juices to maintain hydration. Tepid sponging should be done to lower the raised body temperature. Consult your pediatrician for evaluation of cause of recurrent fever.
Since Meftal-P can cause gastritis or bleeding hence it is not advisable to be continued if the fever turns out be due to Dengue because of the high risk of bleeding due to decreased platelet counts. In that case Dolo alone is recommended.
Hope I could answer your query. A feed back is appreciated.
