Can Meprate Be Taken For Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding?

My daughter is 16 years old. When she was around 14, she got matured and started bleeding more than one month continuously. With the advice of gynaecologist, she started using meprate tablets to regulate her periods. Is there any problem if she uses meprate without a break for long period to avoid monthly periods problem to concentrate more on studies and other activities. What could be side effects.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Medroxyprogesterone is a progestin (a form of progesterone), a female hormone that helps regulate ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and menstrual periods.

Medroxyprogesterone is used to treat conditions such as absent or irregular menstrual periods, or abnormal uterine bleeding.

Side Effects. Nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, headache, change in vaginal discharge, mood swings, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, or weight gain/loss may occur.

Unsupervised use of this drug for long periods should not be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
