Can Methergine Cause Vaginal Bleeding With Clots Post Miscarriage?
I had a miscarriage a few days ago. This is my 3rd one since October. I needed a blood transfusion and they wanted to do a d&c but I declined due to having one a month ago. They gave me methergine and even though the bleeding isn t as heavy. Today I am passing clots again and bleeding again and in a lot of lower back pain and cramps. Does the methergine help push the clots out and make you bleed more? I don t want a another transfusion I ve had 2 in the past month.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Methergine does not cause bleeding or clots. Yet, Methergine leads to contraction of uterine muscles and thereby, it expels out uterine content in the form of bleeding and blood clots. This is to complete the process of incomplete abortion. The a option may be complete with drug effect but it needs to be confirmed by your treating doctor. The abortion that remains incomplete with the drug needs to be removed surgically.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
