Can Misoprostol Be Taken For Abortion If Having A Uterine Fibroid?
dear doc
A friend of mine is 6 weeks pregnant and wants to abort it.someone has told her to take gynaecosid tabs with Misoprostol to abort. The issue is that she has a smooth muscle fibroid around 7cm long. my question is ,that will the pills be dangerous for the fibroid or is it ok for her to go ahead with this
Mifepristone / Misoprostol combination is used for termination of pregnancy up to 9 weeks of gestation. These medicines mainly act by strong contractions of the uterine musculature. At 6 weeks pregnancy, the uterus is not very large in size, though it is soft. This uterus would contract effectively in spite of the presence of the fibroid and will terminate the pregnancy.
However, she would have to be monitored for bleeding. If the fibroid comes in way of uterine contractions, the abortion may not get completed or after abortion, she may bleed more.
Ultrasonography after the abortion would be advised to confirm the completeness of abortion.
These medicines per se should not cause any adverse effect on the fibroid.
I hope this helps you to take the decision.
