I am suffering from MG, Myasthinia Gravis, and have been taking prenislone for the past 18 months along with azethaprine. Recently I have notice my blood sugar running as high as 170 or so. Is this caused by the stroids I am taking? (15 mg/5 mg every other day). Thank you.
Dear Friend, greeting from HCM .. I understand your problem ... Yes steroid a can rise the blood glucose levels .. But you are also suffering from MG which is an auto immune disease .. For which you need to take some immuno suppressant s too .. Check your fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipid levels.. And meet your physician for change of drugs or alternative dose .. But you need to balance the benefit of the drug and harmful effects .. You need strict diet control take more of green leafy vegetables, fruits, oat meal and other fiber rich food stuffs and reduce the intake of carbohydrates .. Thank you .. Do contact us for more question s ..
prednisone is a commonly prescribed corticosteroid.it increases glucose levels in patients with diabetes and also to individuals with impaired glucose tolerance or pre-diabetes.Prednisone induces elevated glucose levels by stimulating glucose secretion by the liver as well as reducing glucose transport into adipose and muscle cells.the overall effect is a reduction in glucose clearance. so prednisolone can increase your sugar level, but when you stop taking prednisolone, sugar level will be controlled. exercise and all precaution should be taken to reduce/control blood sugar.
hope this answer will be helpful to you. for more queries plz don't hassitate to ask.
