Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can stones in the salivary glands be related to tegretol? I have been on tegretol since Sept. from 100 mg bid to 200 mg bid, and finally 800 mg bid. Now today, I had two large stones removed from my salivary duct - an occurrence that I have never had before.
As per your complain Tegretol is not seen to cause any evidence of salivary gland stones and the occurrence of salivary stones in your case does not seems to be due to Tegretol that contains active ingredient Carbamazipine. Salivary stones or Sialoliths cause obstruction in the duct of the salivary gland due to formation of crystalline stones known as Sialoliths from the minerals present in saliva the duct is blocked.
They can occur due to causes like chronic infection in salivary gland, thick saliva etc. To reduce the occurrence you should drink plenty of water. You can suck tart candies and chew sugar free chewing gums.
Hope your query is resolved. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
