Can A Sulfa Allergic Person Use Polymyxin B Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution?

Can I use a Polymyxin B Sulfate & Trimethoprim Ophthalmic (sulfate) Solution if I m allergic to Sulfa/Sulfa Drugs? (I m not sure if this is relevant, but I m also allergic to the Sodium Laureth Sulfate in soaps and shampoos)... I have an infection in my left eye and it really hurts/burns!! I took my 4 year old son in to see his pediatrician last week because he had all of the signs and symptoms of pinkeye. Well, he actually had strep throat AND an infection in both of his eyes. The doc prescribed penicillin for the strep, and the Polymyxin B Sulfate/Trimethoprim Ophthalmic (sulfate) Solution for the infection in his eyes. Fortunately, his eyes got better on their own! Unfortunately, I now have it! Any help, advice, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, Casey

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Since sulfate component is there in the eye drops medication and you are allergic to it, you need to avoid its use.
Instead, you may use some other antibiotic eye drops such as Ciprofloxacin or Ofloxacin.
Kindly consult specialist before you use.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
