Can A Thyroid Biopsy Be Done Without Sedation?

I had a thyroid ultrasound and was advised to have a FNA on a nodule. My doctor would only refer me to a doctor that doesn t use sedation for the procedure. I would like to have this done under IV conscious sedation. What type of doctor would do a thyroid biopsy with conscious sedation and how would I go about finding a doctor who would do this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is not a biopsy but just an aspiration cytology. The doctor will pierce with normal needle two or three times over your enlarged thyroid to get a sample. It is done under local anesthesia and you won't feel any pain. Sedation is not required and the entire procedure will be done in three minutes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
