Can Antibiotics Given For Pneumonia Lead To Ruptured Colon?
My colon recently ruptured, I think it was due to all the antibiotics the dr.s gave me for pneumonia, no one told me about taking probiotics. I had to have emerg. surgery and currently have a colostmy bag...how many probiotics (CFU s) should I be taking a day?
Some antibiotics are prone to cause a condition called Toxic mega colon, in which the terminal part of colon gets grossly distended and even rupture. It is therefore unfortunate that you were NOT given concurrent Probiotics.
Now that you have a Colostomy bag, you will need HIGH doses of Probiotics, such as Lactobacilli + Rifaximin (so as to overcome the 'bad bacteria' in the exposed gut), along with Vitamins B12 and Folic acid in adequate doses, as long as you have a colostomy bag.
Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me and prescribe the advised medication in appropriate doses, depending on you present clinical status.
