Hello and welcome to healthcare forum.
The chin bone, also known as mandible, is not so easy to break. So, your son is mostly having soft tissue injury leading to bruise and swelling.
But in this condition also you are advised to visit your doctor.
Wishing your son good health.
First you need to rule out fracture,if there was fracture then there will be swelling of the chin and intense pain,, since the pain is not significant it doesn't seems to be fracture.. if the breach on the skin is small then no need to go to hospital.. only analgesic is enough..
chin bone , not that easy to break...but still run your finger on the jawline and down to chin border and feel for any irregularity of margin...if irreular border, maybe yes...broken, if smooth, continuous margin, not broken, and amount of pain , and tenderness too will decide how serious it is..watch for 2 days, pain and swelling usually subside, with cold packs in the first 48 hrs, when not broken...and after 48hrs, if required get an X- ray done , if swelling and pain don't subside considerably...
The chin bone is not impossible to break;
However, the chin bone is connected to the body through the joints in the jaw - The temporo-mandibular joints. In the event of an injury like the one u described, it is commoner to injure the joint than the bone, since it is more vulnerable. If ur son has no pain on opening or closing the mouth, u can rule out a fracture.
Again, since he has a bad bruise, it is always better to be seen by a doctor - to treat the bruise - it can get infected easily. All he may need is a tetanus toxoid injection and some antibiotics to prevent infection.
