Can Cancerous Cells Be Removed From Lungs By Surgery?

my mum has been diagnosed with lung cancer, she is still under the care of a respiritory consultant who seems in no hurry to do anything, he thinks the cancer started in the lymph node and spread into the lung, following a full scan tumors have shown up in her shoulder base of spine and knee cap, they say they will not remove the lung and they will give her radiotherapy to give her a little longer. she has had a stent fitted in the last few days to enable her to eat as she was struggling with anything more than drinks.
my question is can surgeons not remove the large cancer in the lung and lymph node then use chemotherapy on the small tumors elsewhere, i dont understand why this is not possible, i know it would be a huge operation for her but she would be in less pain surely? and there would be less cancer to have to treat, i have not been with my mum at her appointments so unsure whether she is telling me truth or not, she seems content with what shes been told, she goes to see an oncologist next week and i will go with her i just want to know upfront if i could be asking them to try out any surgery.

any advice would be grateful thank you . paula
