Can Celiac Disease Cause Lymphoma?

can celiac disease cause lymphoma. I was told many years ago I might have celiac disease because I cannot tolerate eating wheat. I was given a test that showed I was allergic to wheat, yeast, oats, barley, maIt, vinegar, soy sauce, mushrooms, mold, and any foods that have a lot of mould. I stopped eating wheat. I did not realize that duram semolina, rye, spelt, and kamut have gluten in them too. I was not tested for these foods and still ate them. My symptoms of diarrhea, cramps, bloating, weight loss, anemia, and malabsorption of lots of nutrients, even though I ate what I was told was a very healthy diet, improved after I stopped eating the foods I was told I was allergic to. I developed thyroiditis when I was in my early 20 s, asthma, fibromyalgia symptoms in my early 30 s with rheumatoid factor in my blood and no deep stage 4 sleep when I had 2 sleep studies. The doctor prescribed synthroid, which I have been on for 30 years. The other conditions went into remission. All my life I have been a health food and fitness nut, and my occupation is a fitness instructor. Strangely I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few months ago, and lymphoma a few weeks ago. Are they all related?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The exact cause is not known for lymphoma but there are different risk factors that are present. Some risk factors include infection with specific viruses like hepatitis C, Ebstein Barr virus, HIV, family history of lymphoma, history of autoimmune diseases rheumatoid arthritis, decreased immunity and celiac disease is a risk factor for lymphoma.

Despite having healthy habits, there are chances a person can get lymphoma and there is no known cause for this. Lymphoma is treatable. In some cases staging is important for prognosis and in some staging is not important for prognosis. So it's not possible to say the exact cause for it.

So on this, your oncologist can guide you better with treatment and management. Most of the lymphomas are treatable efficiently. Consult your oncologist as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
