Hello, i have been told that i have a Diffuse Toxic Goitre. I am currently taking PTU & my blood test has come back with normal Thyroid levels. My question is that i have been chewing Nicotine gum since 2008 and always have a piece in my mouth, could this have have caused my thyroid problems. Thanks
Hello, Thank you for using HCM! I am trying to give you some more information regarding autoimmune hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease) and the nicotine use. Graves' disease is a pathology caused by the production of the antirecpetor antiboides that stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more hormones and cause Hyperthyroidism. In general is an inherited pathology but one of the factors that trigger it, is the nicotine and thyocianates. Stopping nicotine is sometimes very efficient in treating Graves' disease, so in your case it could be the reason why it still persists. Hope the information is helpful.
Kind regards, dr.M.Guni
