Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Coxsackie Infection Be Transmitted To Newborn?
My older daughter works in a day care and has been diagosed today with coxsackie (Hand, foot, mouth) children's virus. She has sores on her tongue but the doctor said it would just have to run its course.
Eight days ago my daughter visited her sister and her newborn baby for the weekend. Is there any chance that this virus could have been passed to the newborn?
Thanks for your query at HCM. I understand your concern and situation.
The infection usually is spread by fecal-oral contamination but the virus can be spread by droplets expelled by infected individuals. So yes there is a possibility of infection which cannot be completely overruled. I would suggest to observe the child and not to worry as it is self limiting infection.
Hope I answered your query Dr Sheetal Verma
