Can Dental X Ray Detect TMJ?

Hi I'm almost certain I have TMJ, if I try to open my jaw as wide as I can my jaw will lock into place but I can close it. Keep in mind I have never been diagnosed with TMJ as I have not seen a dentist in years. This is gonna be a weird question. If a dentist did X-Rays and a routine teeth checkup would they be able to see that I have TMJ even if I did not inform them about it?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain x rays can be helpful in detecting TMJ in case if full mouth x ray known as Orthopantomogram is taken than shows images of teeth as well as the jaw joints and it would definitely be a diagnostic tool in diagnosing TMJ..
Secondly in case if you have a TMJ leading to Trismus or lock jaw then in case if a dental treatment is being done you will be asked to open the mouth wide and in case if it gets locked TMJ will be definitely be ruled out..
But as you already have the problem you should not hide it from your dentist and get treated after proper evaluation and in your case anterior/forward displacement of jaw joint seems to be the case..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
